In today’s fast-paced world, lifestyle diseases like obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and heart problems are increasing. These issues are often linked to poor eating habits and high oil consumption. Recognizing the urgent need to promote healthier choices, G.D. Goenka International School in Surat organized a week-long campaign called “Oil Free India.” The goal was to raise awareness about the importance of cutting down oil in daily meals. The initiative aimed to encourage students to adopt mindful eating habits and create a ripple effect that would reach their families and the community.
The week began with students creating ‘Oil Boards’ in each classroom. They designed these boards with colourful decorations. The boards highlighted the benefits of reducing oil usage, featured catchy slogans, and offered health tips. The engaging visuals sparked curiosity among classmates and led to meaningful discussions about balanced eating.
A unique ‘Know Your Oil Intake’ survey encouraged students to calculate their family’s daily and weekly oil consumption. This hands-on activity helped them see how small changes in cooking methods could greatly impact overall health.
The campaign gained momentum with an inspiring ‘Oil Talk’ session, where a student speaker discussed the benefits of oil-free cooking. The talk stressed that cutting down on oil can help prevent lifestyle diseases like obesity, high cholesterol, and heart problems. It also promotes a fitter, more energetic lifestyle. Students learned to adopt simple yet effective alternatives such as steaming, roasting, or baking.
To add an educational aspect, the school displayed an ‘Oil Awareness Chart.’ This chart compared different types of oils, their nutritional values, and healthier substitutes. It was very informative for both students and teachers.
The highlight of the campaign was the ‘Oil-Free Food Demonstration.’ Here, delicious dishes were prepared without using any oil. This activity challenged the myth that “healthy food lacks taste” and showed that nutritious meals can be tasty. To extend the experience beyond school, students also prepared oil-free recipes at home with their parents. They captured photos and shared their joyful family experiences, making it a community-driven effort.
The week-long campaign concluded with students pledging to keep practicing healthy food habits and spread awareness in their neighbourhoods. They committed to championing the cause of an “Oil Free India.”
