G. D. Goenka International School, Surat Organises Foundational Literacy and Numeracy Workshop for Parents of Pre-Primary Students

G. D. Goenka International School, Surat successfully hosted a Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) Workshop for Parents , Specially designed for parents of students from Playgroup to Senior Kindergarten (PG to Sr. KG). The workshop aimed to create awareness about the critical importance of foundational skills in early childhood and to build a strong partnership between parents and educators in nurturing lifelong learners.
Recognizing the significance of the formative years in a child’s educational journey, the workshop focused on familiarising parents with the key concepts of early literacy and numeracy, as outlined in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The session was conducted by the school’s expert academic coordinators, who shared valuable insights, strategies, and practical tools that parents could use to support their children’s learning at home.
The workshop began with a warm welcome by the Section Coordinator, who highlighted the school’s commitment to holistic early education. She emphasized that foundational literacy and numeracy are not limited to reading, writing, or number recognition, but include the ability to express, comprehend, think logically, and solve problems from an early age.
The session was divided into two main segments — Foundational Literacy conducted by Mrs. Ankita Mulia and Foundational Numeracy conducted by Ms. Shreya Narang Aneja. Parents were guided through engaging presentations and demonstrations on how language skills such as listening, speaking, vocabulary building, storytelling, phonemic awareness, and early reading habits could be nurtured at home through play-based activities and daily interactions.
In the numeracy segment, parents were introduced to simple yet effective techniques to develop number sense in their children. Concepts such as number recognition, counting, comparison, patterns, sequencing, and early measurements were explained through hands-on demonstrations.
The workshop also highlighted the importance of multi-sensory learning, where children engage their senses through audio-visual aids, tactile materials, and movement-based activities. The facilitators shared examples of how songs, rhymes, puzzles, games, picture books, and storytelling can be powerful tools in developing both literacy and numeracy.
The session concluded with a Q&A round, followed by a feedback session. Many parents appreciated the initiative and expressed confidence in supporting their children’s learning more effectively. They also valued the school’s effort in involving them as equal partners in the learning process.
The workshop proved to be a resounding success, fostering trust, transparency, and teamwork between parents and educators. G. D. Goenka International School, Surat remains committed to delivering excellence in early childhood education, ensuring every child receives a strong and joyful start to their academic journey.
